EVERETT, Wash. — A man is under arrest on suspicion of murder after investigators found evidence that he had killed his landlord then tried to hide the body.
The investigation began Saturday afternoon when the landlord's wife called 911 to report her 67-year-old husband missing.
The wife said her husband had left their Mukilteo home to check on one of their commercial properties in the 2100 block of Madison Street in southeast Everett but did not return.
The wife became concerned, so she drove to the Madison Street property to look for her husband. She told authorities that her husband's truck and cellphone were outside, but he was not there. She also said she saw a tenant cleaning up drops of blood from the sidewalk outside their rental property.
When police arrived at the scene, the tenant had left but officers found fresh blood outside the building, so they forced their way inside the tenant's unit. The husband was not there but officers discovered more blood inside, along with a strong smell of bleach.
Investigators then tracked down the 40-year-old tenant in Marysville and detained him. He was questioned but gave no consistent version of what had happened or where the landlord might be.
The tenant was then booked into the Snohomish County jail for investigation of murder and tampering with physical evidence.
As the investigation continued, a passerby on Tuesday provided police with information that led them to Skagit County, where they recovered the landlord's body.
