These are almost useless against indigenous populations in forested or mountainous terrain or cities. They cant elevate the barrel higher than 20 degrees or so.

While the principals are the same - using a conflagrating powder to create gasses in order to propel a projectile down an iron tube - it's a bit more complicated in execution...
