Animals are property, it's true. And they can't have LEGAL rights, because having legal rights requires responsibility, which animals lack.
But any decent human treats animals with empathy, as empathy is the mark of humanity. Those born without empathy are called "sociopaths" or "psychopaths." They are considered mentally ill, by human standards.
We eat animals by nature, we were meant to do so, and do not thrive if we don't. But that does not mean we can kill them callously, or not consider their pain when we do. We have laws in the U.S. demanding that food animals die quickly and as painlessly as possible (with the exception of Jewish and Muslim blood-letting, which is an exception that needs to be eliminated...PETA? why so silent?).
And certain animals have been our companions for thousands of years, they should be kept exempt from being used as food, out of simple respect.

Animals are great when they're domesticated, collared and housebroken. They deserve kindness, but you can never let them forget who's boss. Discipline is important. Don't let them chew furniture, hump your leg or talk about "emancipation" and "civil rights".

I'm big on animal rights. I think we should look after care for animals. They have their place in society and we shouldn't abuse them. No I'm not a vegan. Additionally it is a sign of APD to be cruel to animals.

Rights is a retarded word to put after animal. Sure maybe I guess we could have some laws regarding animals but acting as if they (or even people for that matter) have some invisible imaginary but intrinsic set of rights is childish
