On short, don't wear a mask if you are not sick because it can increase the strain on your lungs, but do wear a mask if you have covid19 and are in the same house as your family. Also, buy a t-shirt to use as a mask, since flimsy surgical masks are totally ineffective, and really anything will help "flatten the curve" at this point.
Surely the masks would be better used to stop bacterial transfer from the health worker to the patient - their intended use.

Going to go on a limb here: doctors directly deal with confirmed sick patients, most people do not. The main mechanism of transmission in the case of a doctor is via droplets containing the virus being sprayed on his face by a patient or when the virus is aerosolized and just hangs in the air (not sure if that's possible). In the case of your average Joe who exercises self-quarantine and distances himself away from people (as he should in any case), the main mechanism of transmission is by getting your hands dirty with the virus and then getting the virus from your hands into your orifices. Masks aren't going to help against that, but proper hygiene will.
So why was it "panic buying" and "not a threat to the US" even a month ago, and now it's "T-shirt with SPF-90+ required for essential travels, citizen" Am I supposed to take these f-ing clowns seriously?
The CDC says even a T-Shirt is useful against the virus. WTF are you even saying, bacterial transfer? Sounds like a problem for hospitals who will only see a small fraction of the cases from this permanently disfiguring disease.
