We didn’t, this is actually a good thing. We (as in New York) started testing like mad symptomatic or not. This is important as there’s been a large group of people that are suspected to be a large chunk of all cases that will never show any signs but then go on to pass it to others.
That’s why we have the highest amount of cases but rank lower in deaths. Critical cases for the US are also lower than the other hard hit places as we have 2% while others remain higher. European countries are only testing people that show more severe symptoms.

The reason it's pretty shitty is because it's easier to shut everything down in the U.S. since it started in Asia. It started in Asia which is really more Eurasia in that it's one continent in many ways. The U.S. also has more money than everybody else. There's no excuse for why a country basically lucky enough to be an island in this scenario, with tons of cash on hand, to have this happen.
Where U.S. fucked up: should have instituted effective mass testing immediately like South Korea along with shutting down all flights from anywhere in Eurasia. Measures should have been taken in mid-January.

You have to remember. The best comparison of the US is to the whole EU in terms of population. Individual states are as big as European countries.
So the next Italy isn’t the US, it’s New York. What might be true in Let’s say Boston will not be true in Tucson. Even fauci agrees to view this at the state level. Ok, a handful of facts. They might be useful for your survival, or maybe not.
- Chinese stats can be trusted, both on infected and dead. Quarantines are lifted, life is back to normal. It's fact.
- Italian numbers of dead can be trusted. Italian numbers of infected are grossly underestimated, tourists returning from Italy have % of infected well bove 1%, this means that in Italy their own population has also this above 1%. So there are at least 600 000 infected (optimistic number), more like millions. This is supported by the italian authorities themselves as they admit they don't test those with light or no symptomes. Italia at the moment is one big boiling can of virus. Chances that in Italia 100% of population will have had this decease are very high, but it is not that horrible as many can think.
- Same is true about Spain
- German numbers of infected likely can be trusted as their capacities are not overwhelmed. Their numbers of dead can't be trusted as they don't count anyone who already had other life treating problems
- Japanese numbers of infected can't be trusted, there are first hand evidences that they refuse to test anyone even with high temperature and fewer who isn't about to die or who don't develop coughing. Their numbers of dead might be correct or might be not.
- Corean and plague ship numbers likely can be trusted both on infected and dead
- American numbers should be more or less correct (at least relatively to the dynamics of infections growth) if we discard huge population of black ghetto dwellers and social outcasts living and dieing on the streets. These are groups forgotten by all.
- Latin countries and especially Italia got hit so hard because they are the centres of chinese tourism this time of year, unlke other countries.
- Other contries have so few infections yet because they were infected mostly not by chinese thourists but by their own tourists returning from Italy.
We have the third highest population behind China and India. China won't report real numbers, India is too inept to. If we weren't top of the charts it would be weird. The fact that little European countries have higher death rates still is stranger than the US case numbers.

Hard to find up to date stats on every country, but US has done 944,854 as of 30th March, Australia has done 240,388. About 1 in a 330 people compared to 1 in 100 people.
But yes the general rule holds - the richer the country the more tests they do, and the more tests they do, the lower the mortality rate. Australia's deaths are very very low compared to other Western countries.
