Russia was industrializing as fast as about any country in human history leading up to WWI and in 1917, even if most of the country was shit. The October Revolution and Civil War objectively dramatically shrunk the Russian/Soviet economy and set it back a while.
Now, you can argue in some aspects that the Soviet/non-Tsarist regime did do some things that probably or almost certainly benefited the majority of people or the common person more, like the construction of the Moscow Metro.
