That is one interpretation. Another perfectly valid one is that blue-collar workers woke up one morning in America and were no longer categorized as the "good guy." "I'm the bad guy? How did this happen?" The madness to which Douglas' character succumbs can be attributed to him feeling alienated and slandered with an identity that feels entirely foreign to him.
