If atomic bombs weren't used, millions more Japanese people would have died in firebombings and a ground invasion, as they were being forced by the imperial rulers to fight to the death, even the children. The atomic bombs resulted in an immediate surrender that saved countless lives.

The US and Allies were facing an expected 4-6 million casualties invading the home islands, along with 10s of millions of Japanese dead and years more war. A few hundred thousand dead and complete surrender is absolutely a better outcome.

Leaflets were dropped and the warnings were given to the leaders to evacuate their people as the cities will be destroyed. Japanese laughed and said fuck you. So the first bomb was dropped, and the Japanese were asked to surrender lest the US do it again. They refused. Leaflets were once again dropped. Nobody was evacuated. Another city was bombed. The japanese then surrendered.

1. The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki killed at the high estimates 226,000 Japanese (206,000 civilians)

2. The atomic bombings of those two cities undeniably ended the war, which up until that point, it appeared that Japan would not surrender no matter what.
3. I say no matter what, because by conventional bombing of Japanese cities, the US killed about 900,000 at the high estimate.
4. Without the shock the atomic bombs, the US would have kept bombing more Japanese cities and killing even more civilians than died during the atomic bombing, and the war still would have gone on.
5. Without the atomic bombing, the US would have had to invade Japan to force the government to surrender and that would have killed even more people.

So the atomic bombing saved lives.
