I know very little about Hinduism but it strikes me as being on the same tier as Egyptian and Greek mythology, except India was just too much of a backwater to be taken over by either monotheism or true Eastern philosophy.
Making ridiculous metaphysical truth claims is a feature not a bug for religions. The purpose of religions is not to accurately describe physical reality. Religions are social technology that serves to increase the internal cohesion of a synthetic tribe, and promotes good behavior within that tribe.
Therefore, ridiculous metaphysical are a feature, not a bug. They act sort of like skin in the game, making it easier to detect whether someone is truly a cooperating member of the tribe. If a religion was to claim that objects fall toward the ground when dropped, it wouldn't be useful as a shibboleth. Everyone says that. But if it says some nonsense then only believers will stand by that claim, and it helps distinguish them.
Ridiculous religious clothing, like those hockey puck hats - or even better, ritually scarification - serves the same purpose. You have to be a real believer to dress up like an idiot publically.
