Just chiming in, I do not know if the OP is true, and have no information relating specifically to Disney and Star Wars.

What I can say is, MANY times franchises or IP's are sold only later to have them sold back to the original owner at a hefty discount. This happens more than you think, one notable time I can think of is the Power Rangers.

Often the problem is with whoever the buyer is being unable to generate new content off of the IP rather than making money off of the IP. This can result in the IP being sold back to the original IP owner or creator.

I also can say that "IF" Disney sold star wars it is not due to "star wars" being a failed IP. It would be more due to the merger of Disney/Fox which they will fight tooth and nail to hold onto until they cant... Star Wars will be sold first before anything else due to the brand recognition which is how these things work.

Also Disney at the corporate level tends to work this way, one little thing at a time, not all things to keep the stock value from fluctuating too much, since about 1985, this is how Disney has conducted themself.

This is the norm of what usually happens due to the already established relationships and interests when it comes to IP management.

Lucas would have to offer less because of the fees associated with the transition of the licenses, however JJ Abrams did create new properties exclusive to Disney such as the rolling ball BB-8 to replace R2-D2 and other characters, but their value is so minimal it may not affect any agreement whatsoever.

Also keep in mind all gaming was farmed out to third parties not done internally, so that would make any transfer alot easier.

Not even close. All the movies have grossed more than what they paid Lucas, but not by much. Take out expenses and they're still way in the red. The merchandise, which was supposed to be the real money-maker, has been a total dud.

As previously stated I have no connection nor information about Disney and any of its IP's. I am only offering my experience into how a company would sell something off. Its boring stuff really, all boilerplate since it is not a partial transfer but the selling of the IP itself.

Lucas did NOT sell away all his rights, so in this instance he is only buying back the license sold to Disney which would also include the anti-compete clauses which is all standard.

Noone is more autistic when it comes to Star Wars than Lucas himself. From what I understand every night he must be sitting home with this just grating on him every day and every night... It wont go away for him because that is how he is.

Now that I think about it, Disney may not be able to sell Star Wars since they are not the rights holders but are license holders legally speaking. This would mean and I forgot about this that any lawyer even probably the one for Disney would include in the agreement that Disney can not sell in part or whole or lend out the licenses they acquired from Lucas. Meaning that they could only sell them back to Lucas. I say sell not give because its business and this is a transfer of rights which does have a dollar value one could assign to it.

Hope this doesn't happen. This could ruin the franchise.

This means to be up after 10 years they need to earn an average of $650M in net profit every year. They haven't hit that number once yet. Yes, they have abstract profits like IP denial to competitors and being able to (((deconstruct))) the old heroes, but overall it was a money loss compared to doing nothing.

To be clear, Disney has made money from the Star Wars IP. So far compared to what Disney payed for Star Wars combined with the production costs they have not made a profit.

Also keep in mind the shifting of money at Disney is a viable concern.
