The public response to the high number of panic-inducing stories has also lead to hoarding and product shortages all across the nation. The sight of empty shelves at the store and the panicked behavior of friends, family, and neighbors has also fueled the fear and contributed to the mass hysteria.
The way that the media has presented this- with constant repetition and without logical comparisons- is nearly criminal at this point. According to the CDC- influenza has already killed 24,000-62,000 people from Oct 1, 2019 to Mar 21, 2020 (in the USA)- but COVID-19 has only killed 30,000 in the entire world (mostly outside of the USA). Why is the media making such a big deal about a disease that will likely kill fewer people than the flu? These apocalyptic predictions and this campaign of fear don't make sense when you compare them to the 'normal' number of deaths each year due to car accidents- which is a staggering 40,000 per year. If the goal was really to prevent deaths then why wouldn't they spend equal time warning us about the dangers of driving and tell us more about how to prevent all of the other deadly diseases that are much more common?
The real reason for this media-induced panic and hysteria is to continue to paint President Trump in a negative light after the failed impeachment. Immediately after the media could no longer focus on impeachment- they turned to pandemic. Never a positive word for our president despite all the good he has done for this nation so far. Why is the media making such a big deal about a disease that will likely kill fewer people than the flu? for the record, just like i had to tell portugal, you can't reasonably compare a 20 week long flu season to an outbreak reaching it's 3rd week of growth. it is actually very likely coronavirus will outdo flu deaths, but still be way under a lot of diseases. i predict it may match alzheimer's yearly deaths (a little over 100k) but it will likely not pass chronic respiratory diseases (160k), to say nothing of cancer (600k) and heart disease (650k) there's plenty of ways to downplay coronavirus reasonably, but i would recommend staying away from "it's weaker than the flu" unless you want to eat crow in a few weeks
