So it's a pretty common drug that is used for autoimmune disorders like lupus and Sjogrens. The data has not been enough to really say it's a certain treatment (although by now enough anecdotal data is in that associations are recommending it). But when people start to hoard it based on spurrious evidence, it causes a shortage. People with lupus need that drug and now can't get it.

Pharmacist here. We're getting tons of bullshit scripts from doctors written for their own family/friends for ridiculous quantities of plaquenil "just in case". It's not a very common drug and it's currently on back-order because of the spike in demand for it, so I and most other pharmacists are refusing to fill any scripts for it unless they've already been on it, the script is coming from a rheumatologist, OR it's a confirmed wu-flu case (in which case it needs to be the proper dosing as well)
