Is there a link between protecting life in the place of birth and sanctuary and environmental protection mechanisms. Is it possible that we can harm humans or the planet to any degree? As a mothers womb protects life is it so but this is a reflection of this manifested on a global front? A compensation plan? What is the missing link?

There isn't really much to it. Atheism was a hot button issue at the time because this was during and immediately post Bush, the zealot cowboy. It was counter culture. As secularism has marched on, it has become more and more pathetic to whine about religion, because it has finally reached a point where unless you're in the bible belt, religion doesn't really affect your everyday life too much anymore unless you really want it to.
