Why are Protestants so obsessed with missions?
I had an argument with a protestant who said Orthodoxy isn't real Christianity because we don't go around to Africa and the Pacific Isalnds to try and convert people.

Because it advances America's political objectives. Look at Brazil. Evangelical missionaries converted a sizable percent of the population to an American brand of Christianity. Then those converts voted for a right wing president who is friendly to the US. Basically, Christian missionaries are American soft power. During the Cold War, America used missionaries to distribute foreign aid. Wanna bag of rice? Then you better convert to our brand of Christianity or starve.
