Methanol is the reason for the stereotype that moonshine makes you go blind. It's actually converted to formaldehyde (embalming fluid). One of the best home cures for methanol poisoning, if you can't pump your stomach in time, is regular alcohol. Your liver focuses on the ethanol first so hopefully you just pee out the methanol instead of processing it.

I think the lack of a need for fermented food is a symptom of the problems with modern society. We have forgotten to pay attention to the seasons. Unless you live in the northern US or Canada, most people treat every season as the same, even winter. We import fresh fruits and veggies all season. We have a constant supply of meat and eggs. I the past what you ate was clearly defined by the seasons. You planted in the spring and harvested in the fall. You fermented or canned as much as possible for the winter. Meat was preserved to last the winter. Now, there is dietary difference, outside of holidays. We have lost our connection to the land, climate and weather.
