Imagine being a young person spending every cent you own on starting up a new business and then being told to close down because a small percentage of retirees might die if they get a virus.
I totally get wanting to save old people but maybe we shouldn't be doing it to the detriment of the next generation? It's not their world to live in any more.

Small business owner here. This is exactly what I'm faced with right now. I've spent three years and hundreds of sleepless nights getting this business off the ground. Things were finally really starting to pay off. Hired my first full time employee in December. A part time employee in January. Hired another full time employee that is supposed to start in April.

Revenue is down about $2000 this week, and profit is down 30% from the same week last year. It's the first week this year where revenue and profit were down from the same week the year before.

Everyone I see a brainlet equate "the economy" with "the stock market" , I'm reminded that schools are closed right now.

The issue with the economy collapsing is that it removes incentive to work in nearly every society in which it happens. When the farmer is selling the majority of their crop off for barely a fraction of what it used to get, they stop doing that and only grow enough for their family. People begin starving, food demand overshoots supply in a huge way, thus causing prices to sky-rocket. People can no longer afford the food and the stores aren't able to sell it at such high prices (which they themselves had to pay to get the food to sell.) Suddenly people stop working across the board because they're tired of breaking their backs for pennies that can't even buy them a loaf of bread at the end of the day. Society screeches to a halt because suddenly no one is willing to work anymore because no one is eating any more. Some nations might print a shit load more cash and hand it out and this will help in the immediate couple months but soon hyperinflation takes place, the currency becomes worthless, and the situation is made even worse.

A healthy economy is absolutely necessary for a well functioning society. Your life and your way of life depends upon those gears turning day after day. Venezuela today is an example of what eventually happens in just such a scenario.

The suicide rate from all the jobless, homeless, divorces, etc. that will result from the economic damage that is happening now will be far greater than the number of virus deaths over the next year. If you account for victims of crime as well, and all the health issues that poor, homeless people will face, you’ll see how this reaction to the virus isn’t worth it.

Once the emergency has passed and the economy seems to be recovering, no idea when that will happen though, or IF it will even happen. There is no way of telling. My best advice to you is to come to terms with the following question: How much of a loss am I willing to take? You may make a profit, but be prepared to lose your initial investment.

Want to talk about my "sacred" G.O.A.T Daydream. Game/Goals Obstacles/Objectives Adversity/advancements Tribulations/Triumphs. Heh... something like that. Gotta Money is like king, Milk the goat see it's like. By having Goals and Objectives, you spend time and resources to procure advancements and eventual triumphs. That's why you start with something small like a 5-10 year plan, with something for 20-50 down the line, and 100 much more after that....

See the government gives itself these goals, being set by the people kind of thing, to reduce global emissions by a certain percent by a certain year is a goal, short term. Finding alternate fuel, a goal short to medium term. Digging massive caves for underground cities that can manage their own ecosystem for digestive/food consumptions and for oxygen needs of course. Those would be long term obviously. In case of emergency and above ground gets too hot or the oxygen gets thin, or places start drowning. Which leads to goal for the 50 year term, to build an underwater research facility, large like, why not learn to build in the ocean if able to be clean and eco friendly about it?

By setting the goals they are deciding where to allocate funding, for things like R%D over new battleships or billion dollar bombers or nukes or things like that.
