you want enough to sustain long term ammo drought and not dip below a set reserve (e.g. 5000, 2000, whatever) while also being able to shoot occasionally throughout that drought.

I exclusively shoot brass. i've had failures with everything. federal, ppu, etc.

Powder and primers get bought out in panics just like ammo so if you aren't stocked up it's no help to have the equipment. Either you were prepared or you weren't.

I've sold over a dozen mags during the panic. I have about 15 left and 9k rounds. Feels weird having less than 20 mags to be quite honest.

Not really. Steel cases have a higher friction coefficient so a gun that is perfectly gassed for brass might struggle with extraction of steel. Also steel cases accelerate wear in the chamber and extractor and are generally for poorfags or people shooting slav shit they don't care about.

I never understood the fascination that people have with guns and ammo for self defense. Reasearch says that if you're in a situation where your life is in danger the most effective tool you can have isn't a gun, it's a sword. I have 100 Rds of .338 Lapua, 1300 5.56 , 300 00 buck, 64 30-06, and 40 variable (.303, 6.5 carcano)
Unironically I think I'll be alright. I'm not stock piled, but I'm pretty confident in it. Oh and 51 rounds of .308. all the people with more ammo either have far to much for fun , or they really think they are going to go out into a call of duty battle.
Reality is , an experienced marksman won't go through a full mag in an engagement at range, and if in close range you are rolling a 50/50 dice every single time give or take.
Also suppressive fire is dumb in up to even squad combat without CAS or any other supporting factors.
