Accidents, murder, or other creepy stuff. It amazes me more people aren't aware of this but for whatever stupid reason it's taboo to speak about. If you break your ankle while hiking by taking one bad step, you will easily die unless you're found very soon. There's also a lot of crazy shit that happens out in the wilderness. Murder is rampant but apparently law enforcement, government, and park organizations absolutely hate to mention it (for a variety of reasons, i.e. if you announce disappearances, people may more less likely to visit).

if that is all that is then we should see fewer such cases in the future as satellite tracking becomes more commonplace. already hikers have access to satellite tracking devices and services at lower prices then a decade ago. and now with smartphones being paired to satellite communications... the surveillance state could help keep people safe

This actually makes more sense than homeless people from an organ harvesting perspective. If I were to hazard a guess, I'd say the average hiker is a healthy person or at least healthier than the average homeless, who has damaged a few organs with drugs and food pulled out of a trash can.

Three teenage boys went down to a cave, they got lost, nobody knew where they went.
After some time they found them, they were only a few meters away from the opening of the cave. It's very easy to loose orientation in a cave if your flashlight dies, there are some forks in the road and you end up getting lost.
When they found the bodies they saw that they were holding onto each other.
Imagine that.
Imagine first shouting for help, looking for a way out, talking in the dark, giving up, getting hungry and thirsty, not knowing how much time has passed, finally noticing your friend is no longer alive, then your other friend dies and then finally you perish as well.
You'd never want to die like that.
The cave was closed then, you can only go there with an experienced guide. Two friends of mine visited the cave with a guide one time, on the spot where they found the boys bodies there was a little spot of mold/fungii growing.
Everywhere else there were just dead cold walls of rocks.
Creeps me out when I think about that.
