I don't have a link, but I remember reading around a year ago that a lot of accents around the western world are dying out because we share so much of the same media. Not only are we turning into some brown mass, but even the actual diversity of how we sound is fading (this includes regional accents within the US).

Yeah that’s true. Regional variation in accent/dialectic has been diminishing quite dramatically since the advent of television and radio. Looking at the US in particular, television is largely dominated by the so-called “midwestern accent”which has in turn become a sort of standard for the entire country. English speaking countries share a lot of the same media sources, but I think between individual nations there will still be material variation for now.

Your accents are products of the Victorian class warfare. American is the original, specifically Maryland being the most neutral. If want to hear how your language is meant to be spoken, listen to Mike Rowe.

It’s interesting, I was born and raised in a texan suburb yet when I was living in Toronto, ON everyone always assumed I was from there. You would think there would be a pretty noticeable difference — and for some words there is — but as the other user suggested I think modern media has really reduced the extent of regional linguistic variation.

While I was living in Japan I went to a foreign friendly pub there, it was the only one open late and the Japs and Brits were all sitting nicely eating some food drinking some beers, but the Americans were standing. I didn’t get it, why stand? Why walk around the bar? It makes no sense to me. Just sit down
