Rudyard Kipling wrote an interesting short story about how a rich tycoon and a circle of journalists ruined a small village using fake news, vaudville shows, and traveling circuses, all because the mayor and constable were running a speeding ticket racket for motor lorries. The story that broke the camel's back (the sanity and quietude of this village) was called "The village that voted the world was flat" followed by a popular vaudville song that spread the meme in the cities.
It worked so well actual flat-earthers congregated on the town. Story ends with with the popular meme-song getting spontaneously sung in Parliment.
Kipling was a Freemason, and quite imperial. Wouldn't be surprised if he was defacto psyop agent for Her Majesty's secret intelligence services. Your theory had historical weight to it.
