Making the four short insertions into the genome of this new virus could be done by a trained monkey. There are today very nice ready-made kits for PCR mutagenesis, commercially available. Just need to order the correct primers (usually works nicely with the online tools of the suppliers) then play around for about a week with the PCR conditions until you got the sequence right. Did it myself back in the lab, nice technique and "seamless" ... you don't see any traces of insertion in the genetic code except what you put in there.

Nah, doing this with CRISPR would be like cutting bread with a broadsword. Much easier methods are suitable here. Just clone the viral genome sequence into a suitable plasmid, order PCR primers (small synthetic DNA snippets) with the short sequence you want to insert from ThermoFisher and then run PCR mutagenesis kit (can order that too ready-made, just mix together according to manual and put into PCR machine) ... then re-anneal PCR products into plasmids (close the linear DNA into a loop), "infect" some bacteria with it so they produce your plasmid, pick a few bacterial colonies, extract plasmid and sequence if they have the insert you want. If you are not lucky and the lab midgets hate you this can be done in a week per insert (most of it being twiddling your thumbs while the bacteria grow). Grad students usually do this kind of "idiot work".

I once tried to do a very simple mutagenesis with standard methods in a standard plasmid ... for SIX FUCKING MONTHS!! The bacteria refused to grow the correct version for some reason, instead only producing garbled bullshit. I blame the midgets ... but such things do tend to happen in the lab.

Yeah, but that's really ineffective when you really think about it.
And you have to soap up your hands thoroughly for like 30 seconds with soap to be sure that the lipid layer is broken up then rinse I think. Spraying disinfectant (what is you would use?) on something quickly for like a second or two while missing a lot of possible nooks and crannies where the virus could hide seems really ineffective.
