It's the true anime cyberpunk from the early 90's era in which anime was indisputably good, (sci fi>moeshit) which is why they wanted it to fail and glossed over it.

Bladerunner 2020 was good in a similar fashion, same sort of results. I'm still amazed not one but two cult classics even made it through the pozworks.

Alita was originally a female cyborg police officer named Gally in an unpublished comic called Reimeika (Rainmaker). Publishers at Shueisha liked her and asked Kishiro to make a new story with her as the main character. After he had come up with the plot for a storyline he was commissioned to make it a long-running series.

Besides renaming Gally to Alita, older North American versions of the manga also changed the city of Zalem to Tiphares, after Tiferet. Since Kishiro also used the name Jeru for the facility atop Zalem, Jeru was renamed Ketheres in the translation, after Keter. More recent versions reverted the cities' names back to Zalem and Jeru. To further develop the Biblical theme in the original series, Zalem's main computer was named Melchizedek, "the king of Salem" and "priest to the Most High God".

Kishiro is a master of capturing emotions. The part in the manga where Alita finally found Ido only to see that he had lost his memory and didn't know he she was hit me like a freight train. My dad died of dementia, and her frustration with Ido not being able to see her growth after all she'd done to find him was disturbingly real.

I saw it twice.

It grossed 400 million with a production budget of 170 and I don’t think they spent nearly as much on marketing as other films so I wouldn’t say it flopped. It certainly made the studio a decent amount of cash.

I wouldn't say it bombed by any means, just flew under the mainstream radar.

Anita was writing propaganda about "fighting fuck dolls" in fighting games so I guess they see it that way.

Actual good anime is full of 1950s, 80, and 90s sci fi themes which were some of their high point years, and Japan is mostly immune to SJW bullshit I think has something to do with it so they have decided it is doubleplusbad.

I hate action movies that have a female lead. Usually the heroine is snarky towards the men and tries to emasculate every man in every scene and she never fails or gets humbled.

But in Alita, she is extremely loyal and will do anything to protect her stepdad and her boyfriend. She even offers to sell her heart so her boyfriend can get what he wants. And she suffers and gets the shit beaten out of her but never gives up, even when she is just a head, chest, and arm she keeps fighting. I think a good measuring stick for irl women is to show them this movie and see how they react to it and how they react to the main character.

Science fiction is full of outlandish concepts, but I think the strangest concept in Alita is that a woman can be that loyal.

I wish that it would have gotten more publicity than it did to generate more revenue.
For some reason the media Jews didn't like it. It even had the "female role model" the "interracial coupling" and the "evil white businessman". The casting of the originals was changed just to add the last two.
There must be some other reason that the movie wasn't advertised more. I most certainly would have watched it in theaters if I'd known it was out and as good as it is.
