I’ve repeatly heard from people on here and irl that Massachusetts or Boston specially is one of the most racist places in the US. Yet Massachusetts is the birth place of white liberalism as we see it today and it’s one of the few states where the majority of White men vote democrat. How can there two things be true. MA on the whole is very white/liberal and that's reflected in the politics of the state, like if you listen to local NPR the liberal MA identity is basically embodied by Jim and Margery. But there is also the "hardcore" Boston identity; those are the people that have the accents and are from north/south shore or southie and are the degenerate sports fans that most people think of when they think of Boston. In my experience those people are the ones who can be more openly racist, listen to Howie Carr, etc. The same people that spit in Tyreek Hill's face at Gillette and the same people that call baseball players the n word at Fenway. The hilarious thing is that when these racist incidents happen, liberal MA get's so fucking wound up because they hate being called racist, even though it's really not "them", but they'll endlessly write op-eds drawing attention to the incidents which further cements the meme, it's basically a feedback loop.
