If you implement really effective counter measures, you can save majority of lifes and come back to relatively normal functioning society ASAP. While if you go without measures the number of infected will grow exponentially until it reaches very top, leaving millions of dead and probably a real fuckup in society with riots and stuff.

If the curve spikes too rapidly hospitals get overwhelmed and the fatality rate increases from lack of medical care as triage comes into play. It won't just be people dying from the virus either, if hospitals are overwhelmed people will die from unrelated common injuries and illnesses due to lack of hospital care.
