I think the two explanations that make most sense are:
1) the tar in smokers' lungs, and mucous produced in response to the irritation of smoke, is intercepting viral matter and thus reducing the quantity of virus that contacts living cells it can infect
2) the smoke itself - which is relatively hot - damages the virus by elevating temperature in the lungs. A pack-a-day smoker is bombarding their lungs with high heat 20 times a day. Perhaps this culls some virus in the lungs and thus helps limit the severity of a viral infection.

It's very unlikely that smokers are less likely to encounter COVID19, so their dramatically lower hospitalization rate suggests that these two effects (or other factors) are limiting the severity of infection such that hospitalization is rarely required (compared to non-smokers).

Look at all these smokers terrified of their vulnerable lungs trying to cope. Here's an experiment for smokerd, go run around the block... see how it's hard to breathe a bit. Now imagine how the virus is going to leave you feeling.

People in the vaping industry attributed this disease to black market THC e-liquids. Some thought it to be the additive Vitamin E acetate. Regardless, the vaping industry itself self-regulated like they have been for the last decade.

Mysteriously, this illness suddenly disappeared and the MSM stopped talking about it after Trump and vape industry heads got together to pass some bullshit bill on banning vape cartridges, though you can still buy "open tank" e-liquid, the typical product bought by most people who vape.

If this is really the cause of the disparity I've noted, then we can extrapolate how many infected/hospitalized/dead they're hiding based on how many smokers we "know" should be in the official stats.

It's funny you should bring this up as I was just researching countries with high rates of lung cancer to see if there was a direct correlation to higher deaths of covid-19. What I found was the countries with high rates of lung cancer DID NOT correlate to higher deathrates. Thus, perhaps smoking does provide some type of defense. But, there is much more data to be examined before forming a conclusion.

So one false positive is negative, but two false positives makes it positive. How accurate are these tests? We have no reference to know if someone recieves a false positive, or if the tests are accurate. No one can be sure they have the virus. 86% of infected never show symptoms. The simplest explanation is that the elderly (more likely to be hospitalised) that contract the disease are less likely to be smokers. Why? Because 1) Smokers tend to die younger. 2) Co-morbidities you get from smoking (e.g. heart failure, COPD, cardiovascular disease) reduce the ability to perform daily activities -> less social contact.
Smoking is not going to protect from any respiratory infection because it makes you more susceptible to them. The mucociliary escalator, for example, gets damaged by recurrent inflammation caused by chemicals in tobacco products and the lungs are less able to clear out the mucus -> better conditions for an infection to colonise.
