They aren't going to ask people to pay it back, stop stressing. You can only get a debt if you weren't entitled to the payment at the time you got it. I got paid for a year of Uni I didn't go to (legit forgot to tell them), it was about $1300 I had to pay back. They take 'repayments' out of your FN pay which you can adjust down to $10 online if you want to.

On a debt: the quickest way to rack up a debt would be to go onto the wrong payment. Like, if you're unemployed going onto a student payment like Austudy or Youth Allowance instead of Newstart.
You can easily rack up a few thousand dollars debt BUT it really isn't something to panic over IF you do get a debt, while no one likes having a debt hanging over their head at all, it will just slowly come out of your payments ~$40-50 per fortnight.
