Running theory is that the receptor the virus connects to is all fucked up in smokers lungs. so the infection is slower and their immune system doesent have time to ramp up to attacking friendly cells

It's a double edged sword. Yes, the tar in a smoker's lungs helps protect against corona invasion, but smokers' lungs are compromised, and any corona infection will likely end in a higher % of fatalities.

It did occur to me that this could be bad advice, but it's hard to argue with the data.

I've been looking at other datasets, including the Italian outbreak, and this is what the data indicates. The prognosis for hospitalized smokers is worse than non-smokers, but they appear to be less likely to end up needing to go to the hospital in the first place.

Can confirm, as an ex-smoker of 9 years, I have no idea whether my chest feels heavy because of the fu (I've also had an on/off fever for the past 8 days) or simply because that's the way its always been. Either way, there's no way in hell I'm going to a hospital to risk further exposure.

This doesn't even come close to accounting for these numbers. 52% of Chinese men are smokers and men comprise most of the hospitalized AND dead, yet only 1.9% of the hospitalized patients are smokers. By the simple math, you would expect roughly 25% of hospitalized patients to be smokers and even more if smoking actually made you more likely to be hospitalized. Yet it's the opposite. Your explanation is preposterous - there would be COVID-19 infected smokers dropping dead at home in huge numbers because they were "unaware" and thus didn't bother reporting at the hospital.

these studies include patients who died as well; they're not just wandering around the hospital quizzing people in hospital beds, which would indeed be oversampling survivors
