Meanwhile, workers in a hospital setting with actual training still experience a failure rate and get sick. The general Public gets some protection from masks, true, but that’s counteracted by the false confidence they’ll have and the increase in exposures.
The safest thing for the public to do is staying home.

There’s a failure rate even in the best of circumstances. Healthcare workers do get sick. Whether it’s .1% or 1% or 5% I don’t know. But multiply that by 328 million (pop of us) as a baseline and it’s still a big problem.

They're effective at preventing a coughing patient from coughing straight at your face because you're treating the patient and must check his throat and nose, which requires him looking straight at you while coughing. Even then it doesn't help by itself, as corona-chan goes through the mask. It helps in that the remaining particles will be discarded with the mask rather than being spread around by you wiping your face with your hand and touching things.
The reason it's not useful for normal healthy people is similar: sick people cough at chairs, walls, doors, and such and you touch them. Do you wear masks on your hands? No? Then as you can see the mask is useless.
