Having a world reserve currency is generally thought to make trading easier. So, what could replace the USD as the reserve currency?

We have the world's most effecient financial system which also props up our standard of living as people such as the Chinese trust us more than their own government and try to put as much money into our country as they can.
I'm not saying the USD can't fall. It will. When? Who knows. Maybe it will be replaced in practice by the IMFs special drawing rights. Maybe a country will come out with a gold backed currency (No one trusts China or Russia). Maybe some government will create an actually viable crypto. But for now, USD reigns supreme.

Or you could have a nation of one million pushing paper bullshit around, producing absolutely nothing and being capable of producing nothing, and have it have a higher GDP than either of them.

Anything that's a payment for a good or service is included in GDP, based on "market value" (meaning "amount paid").
So if you have a make-work government job for a useless person, their salary is added to the GDP. If you give the same person a welfare cheque, it's not. But the same thing is being produced in both cases: nothing. If you buy a pound of rice for $1, the GDP goes up $1, if you buy the same pound of rice for $100, the GDP goes up $100.
GDP is absolute nonsense, like macroeconomics in general. Macroeconomics is not the study of anything, it's the effort to produce pseudoscientific justifications for whatever powerful people want.
Think of that East Asian trade agreement that Trump pulled us out of a couple years ago. Yes, the US wasn't getting a great deal out of it. But when we dropped it, China had a golden opportunity and scooped up closer economic ties with South Korea and Japan.
Yes, we should put America first. But putting America first with no wisdom or foresight or regard to consequences is just retarded.
