I also haven't played it for years but came back some time ago. No idea about the playerbase but at least the queues for quick matches are as fast as they used to be when I last played.
There were only few new heroes since they cut the funding, also now towers have unlimited ammo and xp is collected as globes. But it's still basically the same game.

I live in a dorm you know, I can’t really grow stuff and it takes a long time to grow things anyways you know which means that you’ll be dead before your food is grown. Also if you have a big place to live in you probably have money so you don’t have to be worried anyways if food prices go up.
