They should be modular and open.
We should be able to build, take apart and upgrade our devices.
We should also be able to review them for bugs, errors and subversion.
The software and the hardware should be as open as possible.
Phones should ship with nothing on them until you load an OS and apps that you decide.
There should be various different competing versions of software for each of the major functions (calling, camera, microphone, etc.) that you can choose from not just one where everything is hidden from you and you're stuck with it.
Hardware should be mapped out. A person with a microscope should be able to verify each physical connection to each and every component so there's no sneaky cross-talk between modules that should not be talking or turned on when they should be turned off.
All this, at the minimum. Also we should end reliance on software repositories favoring instead being able to download whatever code you want from anywhere you want and run it how you want.
Full control. No less.
