GATE. . . As in "Golden GATE program?" I was in the San Fran area "Golden G.A.T.E. program" as a kid. But my parents moved us away so I didn't participate long.

I was in a program but it was just wholesome accelerated learning. It was a pretty small school with limited resources

some schools did tests to search gifted students, and gave them extra activities to further test their ability

My mom is an 8th grade teacher at my old middle school. She correctly guessed where I would place and guessed that my gf would end up being 20 points lower.

Gifted and Talented Education. A school program primarily in the 90s for above-average grade schoolers. Dunno much else about it because 1.) I'm a zoomer and 2.) I went to Catholic school, but I suggest you stick around. I happen to have a lot of traits in common with ex-GATErs, and I probably would've been stuck in one of those programs if I went to public school. Or maybe not; my parents were never big on competitive education.

I was in one, they called it ELPAT instead of gifted and talented. meant the same thing but just some political correctness or not making other kids feel left out when there were ELPAT announcements.

They are called "zenner cards." Those GATE threads told me they were testing your mind reading psychic abilities with them. I got close but failed the testing when I took it because I had no clue how to answer the shape questions.

Long history of lucid dreaming since childhood. Sometimes they seem significant. Dreams are very vivid and plentiful lately but don't seem that meaningful.

same with the lucid dreams, every night since forever. nothing of significance normally. whenever i wake up i go through my dream in my head a bunch of times in order to keep it in my memory.
i'm becoming a boring old crusty man now though, so unfortunately these dreams are WAAAAY more interesting and entertaining than real life these days.

How do you know your extremely weird psychatrist doesn't have your best interest in mind?

I am in graduate school right now. Its liberal arts. I know. I am in the 3% that actually make a living doing this. I do not recommend it for anybody who needs a recommendation to decide.

Within 3 weeks of this program the Dean calls me into his office for a matter of student concern. Fresh off the Jordan Peterson lecture scandals I decided to record the entire conversation.

He shuts the door. Sits down. Looks me in the eye and says, "Listen user, the faculty understands that you are the most talented person in your class. You are also a white male. If we are going to turn you into a leader its going to have to be through the back. Keep your head down and trust me."

I told him I would not apologize for the way I was born and would not be a victim.

"I am not asking you to do that. You are not a victim. You are a target."

He has been right. I have been given 10x the responsibilities of the next student and am seen more as a colleague (I do IT and other technical things for the program. Video editing/graphic design etc.)

so these threads just seem like great big jumble fucks to me right now that I don't really feel like getting into, but will save for later.
i guess i'll just try to bump with a review of what i remember of my gate classes. they weren't very structured, but kept us busy and occupied because most of the kids in it were sponges for what the regular kids were doing in normal classes. early 90s i recall making movies, completely open ended, we made some cheeseball video of making amazing basketball shots that was hilarious for the time because of how bad we purposely shot it. we would do some pseudo government thing every year so we understood how government worked, how to vote on and write bills, that kind of stuff. we would go to a kinda big "expo" every year that was called something to do with mars and learn about how to make a sustainable environment there, there was a contest every year, but none stick out in my memory.

...we learned how to trade on the stock market. it was before there were literally hundreds of websites that do that kinda thing easily (think early 90s), and we were maybe 11 or 12 so it was fascinating.
the bill/govt thing was called model congress if i remember correctly.

There's only 2 major possibilities as far as I can see, until someone introduces another as compelling.

It was used to identify people with certain potentials in order to:

1. Control them, promote them to positions where they could be managed and controlled, stifle their potential.

2. Promote them, let them flourish, raise them to their potential, use them for some good.

we would learn how to make a business and all the accounting kind of stuff that went into it. think very basic and interesting for kids, FBLA (future business leaders of america) kinda deal.

a part of me is drawn to the idea that by stifling potential, they are in fact promoting future growth
the triumphs we have today wouldn't be possible without tribulations yesterday, that sort of deal
maybe I'm giving them too much credit, but we're literally all in this together, the eternal "bad guy" has to be convincing or we'd give up and learn nothing

i think a lot of it was just to keep us occupied and kind of an alternate route bc i know myself and a handful of us were the kids that would get our class work done in a few minutes and then act up or distract other students. but the majority were good kids that would bang out their work and just sit quietly.

I was in the Bay Area GATE program, referred to often as the Golden Gate.
We went to the Exploratorium a lot. Frequent field trips all over the Bay Area.
I had a whole writeup bu the chans think my post is spam so I can't include it.
My little sister qualified, too.
I remember cameras.
I played a lot of games. Chess, Checkers, Othello, Connect 4, Carems, Pool, Card games (Poker, 21, War, go fish, cribbage...).
The teacher was Miss Julia.
There was only 12 of us in my school who went and this was inner city Bay Area, Alameda. Lots of nigs and spics in my school. Only 1 black girl in GATE. Her name was Jonique and she is a Doctor now. Another kid went to Harvard. Another is a politician.
I am a Farmer.
MScs in Agricultural Science.
I don't remember much more. Just had to play a lot of games. All kind of games. I always won, too. Except the kid who became a politician beat me sometimes. But that was it.

we did a debate thing every year too. not as structured as ive noticed it being in high school. but structured well enough for pre-teens to develop an opinion and convey their opinion as a group.
i remember it taking a while to get it through a few ppls heads that you don't have to agree with the side of the debate you are on, but you have to be open minded enough to come up with arguments on that side. so maybe some kinda lawyer precursor thought.

I was in GATE as a child, but they kicked me out because I was too shy and would not socialize with the other kids. They would bring me back in like one or two times every year and make me take stupid tests though.

Yeah I remember a lot of mine, I still remember one i had on january 1st 2016 about a dark pillar with purple writing on it and a mask hovering in front of it, no matter how much i tried to hide the mask would still see me through the pillar and other walls, it was also in an underwater cave.

Well. Let's put this into perspective.
In the movie events unfold on 8/8/21.. But besides that? It was in the 80's (when the GATE program was established from my understanding) & frankly? It was a movie of metaphor... Of course it had a coherent story, but it was beyond that... A glimpse in the future, a hint at these programs we went through - and other strange things I can't put into words.. That movie moved me.

Oh. And look at Yas Forums. Anime is our forté.

a lot of these memories are slowly coming back to me, but it's weird that I come to Yas Forums off and on since i can remember and never noticed any GATE threads. AND just the other day I was having a conversation with one of my GATE friends and we were reminiscing about the kind of stuff we did.

I'm not quite following you. There's constructive stress and destructive stress; some challenge might promote growth, go too far and the thing breaks.
What triumphs have been had, and which eternal bad guy are you referring to?

Personally, I've suffered trauma for 3 decades partly because of GATE, and partly due to other similar influencing factors. My whole adult life has been spent at War. I haven't known real peace in over 30 years.

If they created "us" to be intelligent, fearless, righteous, just, compassionate, erudite, brave, unique, creative, and so on, leaders, and pioneers, in order to have us flourish and stand up against the wrongs of the world and combat evil, then they did so without telling us about the enemy, and ended up throwing us to the wolves naive as sacrifices.

Where were the adults to tell us the truth about the world 30 years ago? About the real groups running things, and the real power structures?

That looks like a lot of evidence suggesting it was and remains for control. Look at the nature of Yas Forums. Still involves containment and controlled opposition.

When I see some real world victories. When I can find, navigate, or see some real peace, growth or progress in my own life, or in those around me, then and only then can I say it was for the greater good.

Right now, and until then, it still looks like one big psyop.

Film is way better than the manga IMO. Otomo approached the film as a separate story and an entirely separate work. The manga is better as a functional and complete action story. The emotional and spiritual themes that are only a backdrop for the plot in the manga take center stage in the film, which is why the plot of the film borders on un-followable. It's about the archetypes and underlying themes and forces playing out, not the individual characters or their conflicts. The soundtrack also elevates the film to a level beyond IMO.
