There's been multiple, widespread outbreaks as recently as the late 1800s. But, "widespread" in those times was still fairly regional so they tended to burn-out quickly. By and large, though, the Indian people a relatively clean people. The problem is that they are like Egypt; millions of people have shitting and dying there for thousands of years. Everything is quite literally coated with shit-dust. But, not everywhere. There are so many wonderfully beautiful places in India.
