The Emperors knew Rome was falling and embracing Christianity by hijacking it was the only way they could hold on to power. So Rome the Empire fell but power still remained in the form of the new Catholic Religion. The Church remained in power of most of Europe for centuries after the Empire fell until the 19th century.
So the Roman Empire really existed from about 400 b.c. to 1800 a.d.
