Rent is fair. They own, maintain and lease the property. They handle repairs, they handle tenant disputes and provide short-mid term leasing.
Not everyone wants to be a homeowner.

It's not all fun and joy, though. Renters fuck up the flats, 90% of the time, they do damage, stuff leaks, breaks etc... It is the responsibility of the landlord that hygiene and other regulations are obliged to. A lot of money has to go into the upkeep of the building, and taxes are a bitch.

Anyone paying annual taxes does not own anything, and there has been a trend of large corporations engaged in buying up houses and condos only to rent them back at prices that are higher then it would have cost to rent via mortgage. This also drives up prices in areas, pricing people out and forcing them to rent.

Nobody who is benefitting from financing should be able to "rent" whatever they are financing. Only that which they paid in full should be rentable.

A clever man would send a rescission of signature notice to the landlord. Force majeure, whether written into a contract or not, is always reasonable grounds to sever a contract.

Like all investments, that is a risk you took when you purchased the property. If paid in full and all you're getting charged is property tax, you can probably afford to a minimum reduce rent for a month or two. Anything else is greed.

In Germany it's legal to unilaterally lower your own rent by up 40% in case of your landlord not fixing this shit.

The reason real estate is so expensive is landlords and foreign investors (looking at the Chinese here) hoard the supply and rent it out. Less supply drives up the cost.

I manage a hotel, so it's much different because there's no contract and it's on a day-to-day basis, but I'd be salty if I couldn't evict somebody if they weren't paying for the night. Much different situation for long term deals like rentals, however.

If evictions aren't being enforced, then private bank mortgages and small business loan payments should be suspended as well.

If they have paid the house in full, all they are paying is property taxes and saving some cash as a reserve for repairs. That would mean, most likely, they are overcharging tenents anyway and could afford some losses.

If they have a mortgage and there is a freeze, then paying rent is fuck all and their complaints are just pure greedy. In that case they would profit greatly.

If there isn't a mortgage freeze then they will be at loss. But it dosen't seem that will be the case.
