Pandemics are slow, if it was a super infectious virus (it is) it takes a year and a half to infect everything. We are only three months in and look, everyone's already locked in their houses.

Well this ends with herd immunity. So the virus is now global and will always be with us in the general population, but as spreads people become immune to this strain, at least in the short term, and the virus has less viable hosts to jump to in order to infect and spread. So the growth will pick up a lot of steam, grow exponentially, peak and then trail off.

As for timeline it depends on how well people socially isolate, if we manage it well that could drag out the peak 3-5 months into the future with a fast drop off after the peak. If we do it badly (which we are, many people are being irresponsible) then the peak is gonna hit us in probably a month with a trail off after that.

But ideally we want the peak way off in the future, flattening the growth curve and not exceeding capacity in hospitals. The faster it's over the worse it will be.

Well the common cold is caused by a rhinovirus but there's about 160 known strains of this virus and getting one makes you immune to that 1 strain but you can always get a new strain. So the question becomes how easily can covid mutate into a new strain and relatively how infectious and deadly are those new strains. We don't yet know but we do know but as it does spread we can keep track of mutations and try and estimate that.

If it can mutate easily and those mutated versions are worse then it could be with us forever in the way that influenza will be, and it could become a seasonal thing.

If it can't mutate or the mutations are kinda crap and burn out fast, then it we'll have it around for about 18-24 months until the vaccine is ready in mass amounts and vaccinating everyone will eliminate it. Like we did with poliovirus for example.
