If you plan on staying in your home, or some area you can defend, a 9mm carbine or one of those ruger bolt action 5.56 rifles are totally acceptable, cheap and probably under-looked. If you can find a complete Palmetto State, Aero Precision, or Ruger AR-15 I would suggest picking those first. But think about what ammo you can find too before you make a purchase.

Also, rural Virginia is going to be very different depending on where you are. Southwest Virginia is going to be pretty safe and there's a ton of pawn shops. Closer to the Atlantic has more blacks, so proceed with caution.

Its not too late to get a gun. Buy for intended purpose: handgun or (better and easier to obtain) shotgun for home defense. Semi auto rifle for hunting or (if it comes to it) raiding.
9mm is fine for a handgun, dont listen to the vidya gamers. .40cal is better if you just have to have it. Anything over a .22 is going to do you just fine, though a .22 is lethal if you magdump
For a shotgun, 12 ga is the most popular. You can get a pretty good used one for under $300
For a rifle, the .223 cartridge is popular. I prefer a .308, but it is not strictly better.
Buying a gun is surprisingly easy, user, as long as you dont have a criminal record.
If you do, illegally obtaining a gun is possible but dont let glowniggers or cops find out about it. It will likely be a hot gun (used in a murder or robbery). If you have trouble with purchasing a firearm, you can order incomplete lowers online that are legal and require on a mill to bore out with a jig guide. You need a measuring caliper to make sure the specs are within tolerances, and the the rest of your fire arm can be ordered for assembly. Lowers don't require much quality in the fact the bolt and barrel handle most of the brunt of the gas system.

600$ for a good used/tiny new mill
150$ for Calipers and cutting bits
another 100$ for a reusable jib kit
550$ for AR upper, buffer tube assembly, trigger/safety/hammer. Bolt carrier Group, Barrel, Barrel nut, Gas key and Gas tube, and Grip.
Doesn't have to be nice, just has to work. also get M4 barrels, and uppers, chambered in 5.56
