the non medical masks are fucking worthless. Medical masks used in a controlled environment are useful, but are one time use, only. And for the most part are used to protect the patient from the medical staff.

A virus like COVID19 can live on any surface (most surfaces) for up to 72 hours, or if someone sneezes it can stay in the air for up to 3-4 hours, if you are wearing a mask and you either touch it or breath through it, the virus is now on that said mask.

Also, the N95 masks are a negative vacuum style mask, meaning the person who is potentially infected can still breath freely all over everything.

N95 masks offer protection, “medical grade” or not.

Are they perfect? Of course not, it’s about mitigating risk of infection. Washing your hands isn’t perfect but you do that anyway. And people are forced to reuse n95 masks in hospitals because of a shortage, so the evidence suggest reusing a mask is better than nothing.
