That's actually a good question, the yellowstone hot spot has drifted (stayed in the same spot but the continental plate got dragged over it) from northern Nevada to it's present position, like the Hawaiian islands hot spot. Plate might be cracking from a fresh magma stream coming up.

No, it has nothing to do with Yellowstone. The entire basin and range province which ranges from the sierra nevadas to western Utah (where Salt Lake is) has numerous fault systems due to the geology. Earthquakes are common in this region, not just out west near the San Andreas. Yellowstone is very different from this region geologically, it is due to a mantle hot spot in which heat from a mantle plume creates a subterranean caldera deep within the crust which bulges up and leads to the hot springs, geyers and other geological features. This is very different from the fault systems that are in nevada, which is the result of the earth's crust stretching, leading to alternating mountains and valleys with lots of strike and slip faults due to the stretching.

Just open up google maps and look at the topography of Nevada and you will see what I'm talking about. Long lines of mountains separated by long valleys.
