From what I can gather, the Jesus movement failed to convert many jews. So they changed their tactics and started appealing to gentiles, in particular in Greece and Rome. The vector for this was Paul, the one Roman in the apostles. Evidence for this is that the gospels of John and Luke are much more "pro-roman" so to speak, while the gospels of Matthew and Mark describe romans negatively, and characterize them as villans (for example, emphasizing how they tortured and spit on jesus). The later gospels were probably written by later authors who were trying to appeal to a Roman audience.
