There's nothing to work for and nothing to be certain in. The moment you're able to create even a small feeling of confidence in young people for their future then they'd be quick to plug in back or give it their all.
I think the problem lies in suppression over generations that created a sort of self-defeating effect that's hard to break out. It was present in older generations but not as intense so what we're seeing now and we'll see with even newer ones are perhaps half of the youth dropping out with the rest not really taking any responsibility for anything and only think for themselves. It might even be rare for them to have any kids even if they have the money and resource to raise them.
The suppression came from fear of pic related. They were probably too afraid it would be a slippery slope and lead to a repeat but instead it made something worse.
