It makes it easier for supply (who is normally concerned with expendable items like lubricants and paper) to keep track of where these higher value, non-expendable items will go. Last time I had a barracks room (Italy, 2 years ago, single E6 live in them), the furniture was bar-coded. I imagine that it is possible that a cell door in a military prison might be serialized.
