They have those bar codes in ISO 9001 certified facilities so everything can be traced. Typically only the government would pay for an entire facility to be ISO 9001 certified. Essentially it means the supply chain for everything can be traced, you can figure out who mined and refined the steel that went into that door, who made it, when it was shipped, who worked on it, everything can be traced.
It adds dramatically to the expense but it results in a higher quality product because there are more quality checks along the way, from raw metal to finished product.
