I've spoken to people you've been there. I also have some friends from South Africa. On top of that I've watched many documentaries and read a couple of books about Africa. I've also met dozens of African immigrants from various countries. My general impression is that as far as we (Euro-Anglo-etc) are concerned Africans have 2 options:
1) become more respectable through economic growth
2) become more respectable through unique cultural output (notice how India, despite being so goddamn poor and backwards, is generally respected because it has such a solid, intriguing culture)
