Japan is being really stupid about the corona virus. Everything is running as normal and nobody seems concerned at all. Trains are packed and people are still socializing. My job gave us 2 weeks off due to the virus, but they want us to go back to our normal work routine starting Saturday. I work in the tourism industry, so I’m exposed to a lot of different people each day which gives me a significantly higher chance of being infected than your normal person. Would it be better for me to quit my job and head back home to the US, or just ride it out here? Should I quit and bunker it out? Don’t trust the low numbers of infected that you’re seeing on the news, they’re refusing to test anyone. Also, I have asthma.

I have been fairly optimistic since the spread in the Tokyo region has been very slow and seemingly isolated to a few clusters so far. But in the last few days there are quite a few cases in places where there were none, and seemingly unrelated to the clusters. If we are unlucky the explosion may be coming within the next two weeks, if it is now spreading in workplaces and on the trains...
Funny thing is they are not even considering cancelling the Olympics, i hope that by putting all countries in one place finally seals the deal and make coronavirus way more permanent.

Well yeah but if you check the cases on the map, then for example for me I live on the Tokyu Toyoko line so that is relevant to me. So far there's been e.g. three cases in Yutenji. One was identified some time ago and then two more about a week ago. So it's local.
But now the recent few days (lilac dots on the map), cases start popping up at random locations. The closest to me is Shimomaruko. How did that person get it? On the train? Well if that's the case then things might be heading south rapidly.
Then the only way to stop the spread will be to start shutting down offices and trains.

The rate of identified serious cases and deaths should correlate fairly well. They need to know about people who are hospitalized in order to take appropriate measures to prevent hotspots breaking out within the hospitals. If that happened we would be likely to hear about it since no one is immune and it would be hard to suppress the impact if whole hospitals were taken out.
