I think I came across this while researching adrenochrome because this sounds pretty similar to what it it used for.

Judaism tells them not to do that sort of thing, as "blood is the life" and considered unclean. However it could have put an idea to do exactly that and that blood has magic powers. A lot of the jews were killed for being accused of witchcraft rather than because of simply being jewish.
I also think it could stem from Khazar influence as steppe people are big on saving as much blood as possible. Genghis Khan supposedly taught the Tuvans to slaughter sheep by rolling the animal on its back (which suffocates it) while making a cut into the chest, then the heart is squeezed until the animals is total dead.
