It would help to know more about your dwelling. Living in a semi rural area tells me a lot less than whether you're living in a house or an apartment. Anyway, nothing feels safer than having a pistol under your pillow at night.

For home Defence I would not buy a rifle, (though that is is still a good investment if shit hits the fan bad). I would say buy a 357 magnum revolver (snub nose). It’s simple, small, and very lethal. A rifle can be very disorienting indoors particularly in a small dark place like a bed room.
