It's like this. There are multiple drugs being tested as treatments for Covid-19. Each of those drugs are undergoing clinical trials all over the world. Whenever one of those trials comes out successful, or even when someone finds a drug that might work because it did favorably in-virtro and needs to be brought to clinical testing, the media reports it as "cure found". Why? Because reporters don't know shit about any of the process involved in testing anything.

Generally speaking, we're mostly not creating new drugs here, but testing existing drugs to see if they work. Big Pharma isn't likely going to profit on selling some unique drug, but they may make some decent money on the sheer volume of people to sell the existing drugs to. In any case, many drugs we are testing were first suggested by China, and then have subsequently been tested in other countries. For instance, Chloroquine (an anti-malaria drug that's relatively cheap) is currently recommended by China and South Korea for treating Covid-19, but not in any western countries or by the WHO yet. Meanwhile, France and Austrialia have both undergone relatively successful trials with it.
