It spread in Wuhan since at least December 8, and it exploded January 21st.
So why did it explode? Simple, reinfection is much worse than initial infection.
This means it took six weeks for most people to go through the incubation period, onset, and then got reinfected, and went through the second incubation period, which considering it seems to become longer and longer, could possibly be longer than the first.

I agree with you. I think people should be moderately worried, and that there should be severely limited contact amongst people until the first 3 weeks to a month is over. Past that point, people should still have a reduced amount of contact and maintain good hygiene habits until about mid-June/early July, and things will probably level out and be fine. There will only be a huge problem if people, like I said, act like apes, and go about their day as if nothing unusual is happening. Let me ask you this, why did you never support holding people hostage in their homes and crashing the economy for any previous flu season since it's so far demonstrated that it is as deadly if not more?

I'm not claiming that it's going to necessarily spread like crazy assuming people act responsibly, but I do think that within a month there could be potentially millions of people with the virus, and some of those people could die because there wouldn't be enough infrastructure in place to take care of the more critical cases. It is sort of a mixed blessing that this virus isn't as deadly as other viruses could be -- it's given us a trial run of pandemic response, and people will take the next one more seriously, and governments will give more funding to preventative measures. Hopefully, people will start to pour a lot of resources into pre-emptive vaccines for certain viruses that have yet to make the leap to humans, but could present a major threat similar to this one.

I would contend that the regular flu is far more widespread, and probably has a much lower mortality rate, so the numbers are skewed. I think that it's better to be safe than sorry in these instances, and I'm not really trying to be a doomsayer. If I got the virus, or if I have the virus (my chest is burning, I have a sore throat, but I think it's just allergies), I wouldn't really be concerned that I would die because I'm 26 and in relatively good health. However, if it spreads enough, there will be enough low percentage fringe cases where people need critical care, but the resources aren't there. Hospitals in Italy are way past capacity, there aren't enough coroners to deal with bodies in certain hotspots, etc., so I think that's a fair assessment in general.
