American school lunches have always been revolting. One step above prison food. The only good thing was the fresh fruits, the awesome dinner roll, and the vegetables which were salty but edible.
The main courses were always horrid - burritos with metallic meat sauce, dry pizza, burgers that tasted nothing like a burger, chewy fish sticks, and the mystery meat that was called a chicken patty

Why does everyone make fun US school food? I grew up in Europe, in three different countries. Then I went to high school in the US and I was thrilled that I could eat cheeseburgers and chicken nuggets for lunch at school. No kid wants to eat salad and pretentious garbage. That being said, looking back, the food in the European schools was great also, but not the type of food that a kid gets excited about.
