Also we are not out of food. Rice, beans, fresh vegetables, all of the shit you SHOULD be buying in a panic is still here. We've been putting out palettes of ramen noodles and they're being emptied within minutes, yet all of the canned soups and beans are still full. All of the milk and meat is gone, yet all of the plant shit and basedmilk is still full. (Proving nobody wants that shit) Yogurt, bacon, everything that isn't ground beef or chicken is essentially full, yet we're pulling in a million dollars a day.

Supermarket worker store person here. Can only speak for my place, but I am pretty sure most supermarkets operate the same way.

SM's work on a pretty tight profit margin for many items, they go for turn over to make their money. Space is highly valuable to SM's, they try to keep storeroom space as small as possible and actual consumer shopping space as large as possible. Its all about maximizing turn over and profit.

That means that at any given time the stock the SM can carry is strictly limited. Deliveries are limited too, and despite what you might think most SM's can only process so many deliveries per hour. There is a limit on how much they can be resupplied per day, even if logistic companies could actually deliver more than normal.

So, its bottle necks all the way through to the supermarket shelf. The profitability of the SM depends on how well they manage those bottle necks. Now shit like toilet paper is a hugely bulky and very low profit item. SM's would not even bother stocking the stuff if they could get away with it because frankly its really not worth the shelf and logistical cost. They only do because otherwise people would shop elsewhere for the convenience. By contrast shit like cosmetics are very high value items, SM's love that shit. Never perishes, high price per volume.

So its not like they have actually run out of toilet paper or cant order more in, replacing some shelf and storeroom space with extra TP, no, its simply just a matter of profit margins. Keeping the cosmetics and comfort food on the shelves is far more important, money wise, than giving over extra room to toilet paper, and other essential shit like canned food and rice. Its one or the other because of the bottle necks. They know the panic will eventually subside so they will not lose customers, especially when there is the virus as a reason. So fuck the TP, lets keep selling shit we actually make money off.
